GHERKIN INDUSTRY - INDIA
IIndia has today emerged as the origin of the finest gherkin cultivation, processing and exports to the evergrowing world requirement.
Gherkin cultivation, processing and exports were started in India during the early 1990s with a modest beginning in Karnataka State in South India and later extended to the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and now has reached an impressive tonnage of 2,25,000 Mts. valued at around USD 307.75million
The export of processed gherkin is done by about 30 companies located in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Gherkins are grown in contract with small and marginal farmers. Currently there are more than 90,000 small and marginal farmers who are engaged in the production of gherkins.
The gherkin industry provides direct employment to more than 180000 people at farm level and 30,000 people at factory level who are mainly from the nearby villages where the industries are located. Apart from this it also provides indirect employment for about 20,000 people.
Gherkin industry in India is today fully oriented and its exports are mainly of two categories:
- Provisionally Preserved (preserved in vinegar/ acetic acid / brine) exported in bulk form packed in 20 Lts ,240 Lts 260 Ltr food grade HDPE Drums.
- Valued added preserved Gherkins packed in Jars and Tins, which are ready to eat.
Gherkin industry in India is very well established with exports to more than 20 Countries comprising of USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Poland , Russia, Estonia, China, South Korea, Japan , Sri Lanka, Middle East, Israel, Australia, etc..
In India there are about 30 major companies producing and exporting gherkins in drums and ready-to-eat consumer packs.
Crop Management Support
The company extension staff, support and guide the farmers in crop management throughout the duration of the crop cultivation. Farmers are obliged to produce the crop as per the package of practices laid down by the company. Very strict adherence to EU and US pesticide norms is the key to success of Indian Gherkins Industry
